The iPhone 14 the release date is fast approaching. We’re expecting four new iPhone 14 models this year, and they’ll likely be available for pre-order in just a few months. Head below for full details on everything we know about the release date, potential for delays, and more.
iPhone timelines over the years
While early models were typically unveiled in the first half of the year, Apple has since moved to a consistent schedule of announcing and releasing new iPhone models in September. Here’s a quick timeline of iPhone releases over the past few years:
- iPhone 13: September 23, 2021
- iPhone 12: October 23, 2020
- iPhone 11: September 20, 2019
- iPhone XS: September 21, 2018
- iPhone X: November 3, 2017
- iPhone 8: September 22, 2017
- iPhone 7: September 16, 2016
As you can see, the iPhone release schedule has become relatively consistent, but with two big exceptions. The iPhone 12 series was delayed by a month due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The iPhone X was announced in September but was not released until November. As you may recall, the iPhone X had an all-new design and was the first iPhone with Face ID.
iPhone 14 release date news
The iPhone 14 lineup is expected to bring camera upgrades, redesigns for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and more. For example, the Pro models are designed to have a punch + pill-shaped cutout. The front camera is expected to be updated, a new purple color may be offered and there are rumors of an always-on display.
This year, all indications are that the iPhone 14 is on track for a September announcement and release. This includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. That’s the full lineup of new iPhone models we’re expecting this year.
If history is any indication, Apple usually holds its annual special event to announce new iPhone models on the first or second Tuesday of September. This year it will be September 6 or 13. Given that Labor Day is September 5 in the United States, the most likely date for a major note this year is September 13.
With all that said, we still can’t completely rule out the possibility of delays. As we’ve discussed many times, there are numerous issues affecting the supply chain right now, ranging from shortages to shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
so far we only saw one report indicate that the iPhone 14 is facing production delays. And even this report shows that the delays affect the iPhone 14 Max, not the other three modes. Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the iPhone 14 lineup is still on track for a September launch and release. However, he noted that the iPhone 14 Max is “lagging” but the situation is “under control”.
However, Apple will always prioritize iPhone production over its other products. The iPhone is the company’s biggest product, generates the most revenue, and is what Wall Street investors care about the most. If additional supply chain issues arise, we’ll likely see other product delays before the iPhone 14 is delayed.
